INTERVIEW: Skies Behind and “I Love It”

0

Emerging from Cork, Ireland, Skies Behind, the bold and self-reliant alternative rock phenomenon, has unveiled their latest musical creation to the global audience. Titled “I Love It”, their fresh track is an optimistic anthem, evoking a desire for more from its listeners. This song marks the initial release from their highly anticipated EP, The Spaces. We got to chat with the band to know more about their background, creative process and upcoming plans.

– Hey guys! Can you please start by introducing yourselves and telling us about the story behind the name Skies Behind?

The name of the band doesn’t really have a meaning. Our drummer, Joe, just decided one day seven years ago that the band would just be called Skies Behind and we just stuck with it. He says it means that ‘life goes on’ – kind of a no matter what happens we’ll keep on trucking.

– How did the band come to be?

The band started in 2016 when Joe grabbed a few of us from school and from knowing each other as kids, we just started gigging in local cafés and youth centres.

– What can you tell us about your new track “I Love It”?

This song is about the overwhelming feeling of not being in control and not understanding what will make you happy. The hope in this song comes from the realization that leaning on those closest to you, and being there when they need you, is the greatest source of balance.

– Tell us more about your creative process. Do you work as a group while working on new songs or each member has a specific job and you split the tasks?

We used to have a 6 step process. Write, Demo, Practice, Gig, Fix, Record. For The Spaces EP it was more of a hotpot of creativity. We locked ourselves in our house and just wrote songs every week for 6 weeks. One of the hardest parts was picking the best 5 or 6 ideas out of the 17 or so that we had. But after spending those 6 weeks writing we recorded the drums in ClayCastle Studio in Youghal. We then sat down and recorded all the guitars and vocals in our front room. Rather than gigging and fixing the tunes before recording we just went straight into recording and releasing.

– What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?

Just don’t stop. It’s really really hard to commit to a project to the extent that the music business needs you to. So, grab the people you love the most (‘cos your friendships and relationships will be tested) and just keep going until everyone else finally sees what you’ve been seeing in yourself.

– What’s coming next for you?

We have the release of this EP The Spaces on January 5th and that’s immediately followed by our 13 date headline tour of Ireland & the UK. After that we have a few small exciting projects that we’ll be sharing soon!
