The Gloomies

By Alexie Jung

The Gloomies, led by multi-talented artist Andy Craig, offer a captivating blend of indie rock and dream pop. Hailing from Southern California, The Gloomies’ music is characterized by introspective lyrics, atmospheric soundscapes, and infectious melodies, earning them acclaim from fans and critics alike. Get ready to delve into the creative world of The Gloomies in this exclusive interview with Andy Craig.

– Can you start by telling us who’s behind The Gloomies?

My name Is Andy Craig and I am the singer/songwriter of The Gloomies. There have been a few rotating live members over time, but currently The Gloomies is a two piece, made up of myself and Scarlett Connolly.

– Back in 2015, you earned the title of “Buzz band of the week” on NME. How does it feel to get such recognition?

It was cool, and really unexpected at the time. The song that got attention was a demo that later got taken off our soundcloud and replaced by the album version.

– You’re now back with “Cave”, what’s the story behind the song?

‘Cave’ was a turning point—it shaped the entire direction of the record. I scrapped an earlier version of the album once ‘Cave’ showed me where I wanted to go. It is one of those songs that feels really good when driving up the coast.

– How did the collaboration with Big Red Roses come to be?

We’ve always had overlapping projects, and decided to bring her in to play with The Gloomies regularly at the start of making the new album, in which she plays most of the Saxophone and sings.

– You’ve been in the industry for some time now, what’s your secret for longevity? Any advice you could give to up-and-coming artists?

Allow your music to evolve with yourself. I have just always wanted to make music that I enjoy so I have done that instead of trying to please others. I try to keep all the other clutter out of it and just stay focused on my music. You really have to want it because It’s something that takes a lot of time and effort and often doesn’t get much return for your hardwork.

What’s coming next for you?

Our new album Slime and the Stems comes out on May 17th. We are currently booking shows, doing lots of recording, and gearing up to play a lot of the new songs live. We are excited and ready for this new era of the Gloomies to finally be released into the world. Expect more shows, more songs! See you soon.
