Interview by: Alexie Jung
The colorful pop singer Theresa unveiled the official music video for her single ‘Magic’ a few days ago. The one-of-a-kind artist is on a mission to encourage everyone to follow their dreams.
Indeed, Theresa began writing songs at 11 years old hoping she would become the next Madonna but it wasn’t until she reached her early forties that the artist released her first single. Facing hard times during her childhood she had to temporarily give up on her dream of pop stardom, only to find out later that she was born with a gift of music and had to share that with the world.
We spoke with the artist about her career, her song ‘Magic’ and the story behind her new music video.
- Hi Theresa, I must start by saying you are so inspiring! I bet it wasn’t easy to follow your dreams of becoming a full-time recording artist in your early 40s. What motivated you to do so?
In all honesty, there was just something inside of me that propelled me – a little voice inside of me that told me that there was something more out there for me. I had always had dreams of pursuing my music career but the timing just wasn’t right or I just did not believe in myself as much as I could have. What’s funny now is that I can’t imagine not doing what I am doing. It’s a hard balancing act to work a full time day job (I lead a music team at a very successful and creative ad agency) plus all the responsibilities that come with being in my 40’s, but I love working on my music and sharing my songs and story with others. It really brings me such joy!
- You’ve just released the music video for your track ‘Magic’, can you tell us more about the creative process behind the song?
I started writing “Magic” the day Joe Biden won the US Presidential election. It was an unseasonably warm day in November 2020…and I remember everyone was out and about. I had a few glasses of champagne at brunch and took a walk with my husband around our neighborhood and it felt like the Covid insanity was on pause for the day – there was a magic in the air…an electricity. I happen to be a super positive human, so I tapped into that energy to create the lyrics and melody and then partnered up with my dear friend Spencer Ludwig to bring the song to life.
- How was the music video filming? Did you come up with the scenes’ ideas or did you work with a team?
I wanted to share the story of finding magic within yourself and I worked with a fabulous team to bring that concept to life. Director and Editor, Vincent Aliperti of Color Drunk Productions helped craft the story of the video with me and had so many awesome ideas that brought it all together. And the amazing Mariel Marino worked double duty with my makeup and hair for the video – really staying true to the magical theme.
- What message(s) do you want to give your fans through your music?
I firmly believe that we can all follow our dreams, no matter how big or small, at any age. My story is definitely a unique one filled with twists and turns but I wouldn’t trade it in for the world. I am so grateful to have experienced everything along the way that has brought me to this very moment. I have no doubt that all my dreams will come true!
- What are your biggest goals in terms of music as of right now?
I just want to continue to write and produce timeless pop songs that I would want to personally listen to on repeat. I want to continue refining my live act and seriously share my story with anyone who will listen!!
- As much as it pains me to say… We’re reaching the end of 2022, so what can we expect from you as an artist in 2023? 🙂
More music. More shows. And most importantly, more growing…I am looking forward to continue sharing my evolution of a lady one day – and song – at a time.
